Insurers Have Paid $4.2 Billion in LA Wildfire Claims – Recovery Efforts Progressing

Wildfire recovery efforts in Los Angeles are moving quickly, with insurers already paying $4.2 billion in claims, according to data released by the California Department of Insurance. This financial relief is helping policyholders rebuild after the devastation caused by recent wildfires.

Tracking Claims & Consumer Transparency

To enhance transparency, the department has launched a public consumer claims tracking system, which provides real-time data on:
✔ Total claims filed
✔ Partially paid claims
✔ Total claims paid to date

This system includes data from admitted carriers, the California FAIR Plan, and surplus lines insurers, offering policyholders and industry experts insight into the ongoing recovery process.

State Officials Holding Insurers Accountable

“With so much misinformation and speculation about our insurance market after the Southern California wildfires, it is critical for the public to track claims and monitor payouts,” said Ricardo Lara, California’s Insurance Commissioner. “All eyes are on the insurance companies, and so are mine.”

So far, 31,210 insurance claims have been filed across home, business, and disaster-related needs. Of these, 14,417 claims have been partially paid, with insurers working toward full payouts as rebuilding efforts continue.

Advance Payments to Support Survivors

In a January 23 bulletin, Lara ordered insurers to provide immediate financial relief for affected policyholders:
📌 Advance payments for personal property replacement – Insurers must issue 30% of the dwelling limit (up to $250,000) without requiring an itemized claim.
📌 Living expense assistance – Insurers must send four months’ worth of additional living expenses to policyholders impacted by the fires.

“I expect insurance companies, including the FAIR Plan, to continue providing advance payments that are essential for getting survivors back on their feet as quickly as possible,” Lara added.

Unpaid Claims & Ongoing Rebuilding Efforts

A significant portion of the remaining unpaid claims includes property damage and debris removal costs, which will be paid out as rebuilding begins.

Insurers Committed to Recovery Efforts

Denni Ritter, Vice President of State Government Relations at the American Property Casualty Insurance Association, reaffirmed the industry’s commitment to helping Californians recover:

“From the onset of the wildfires, insurers have been on the frontlines assisting customers with disaster recovery — proactively reaching out to impacted customers, setting up help centers, and deploying catastrophe teams to help residents get claims started and secure emergency housing, food, clothing, and other resources in their time of need.”

While this is just the beginning of a long road to recovery, insurers remain dedicated to helping Southern Californians rebuild and restore their communities.
